RM of Spiritwood’s story
The Rural Municipality of Spiritwood No. 496 was incorporated on December 9, 1929. It lies in the north-central part of Saskatchewan, west of the City of Prince Albert, and its office is in the town of Spiritwood.
When it was formed, the RM took in the neighbouring RM of Shell Lake No. 495. That municipality had started out as the RM of Shell River No. 495 and was renamed Shell Lake before November 30, 1935.
Today the RM surrounds the town of Spiritwood, the village of Shell Lake, and the resort villages of Echo Bay and Big Shell. It also includes the organized hamlet of Spruce Bay and a number of localities, among them Bapaume, Capasin, Leoville, Mildred, Norbury, Penn and Ranger. The Witchekan Lake and Pelican Lake First Nation reserves are also found within its boundaries.
